The
railway is never far away from Dduallt and the line runs above
the house, about a minute's walk from the front door. There
is a private platform accessible only by the guests of Dduallt
from which passing trains can be hailed. Just stick out your hand and a steam train will grind to a halt.
The platform provides a great vantage point from which to
appreciate trains coming up the line. You can hear the distant
whistle as they pull away from Tan y Bwlch station and as
they approach the plumes of steam puff out above the trees.
Finally the train emerges rounding a bend from which you get
a panoramic picture of up to a dozen carriages chugging their way
up the hillside. To get an idea of the train and the cottage you can have a look at this short YouTube film.
The old siding from Colonel Campbell's day has gone but remnants
of the electric winch can still be seen. In days gone by this
was used to hoist goods through the trees down to the house.
Weekly rover tickets are available to guests and in 2010
the price of an adult ticket is £18.50 and £9.25 for a child.
